Immediately after the treatment, the lips often appear fuller due to the filler and additional swelling than the later result. Therefore, experiences from the first 24 to 72 hours are not to be equated with the final outcome.

A reliable assessment is usually only possible when the initial swelling has significantly subsided.

How do the lips change after a Hyaluronic Acid Injection?

The exact course is individual. Typically, it can look something like this:

Immediately after treatment

An initial volume effect is immediately visible. At the same time, redness, tenderness, small injection sites, and swelling may occur. Slight asymmetries are not unusual in this phase.

Day 1 to 3

Swelling can be clearly visible in the first few days. The lips may feel firmer, tighter, or uneven. The result should not be definitively assessed at this stage.

Day 4 to 7

For many patients, swelling and pressure gradually decrease. Small bruises may still be visible.

After about two weeks

After approximately two weeks, shape, volume, and symmetry can usually be assessed more reliably. If knots, persistent pain, or noticeable asymmetries persist, a medical check-up should be performed.

A natural before-and-after result does not necessarily mean that the change is barely visible. Crucial is whether the shape, projection, and volume match the other facial features.

For a harmonious result, the following are particularly important:

• the ratio between upper and lower lip

• the projection of the lips in profile

• the visibility of teeth when speaking and smiling

Medical control is particularly necessary for:

• unusually pale or mottled skin areas

• cold or poorly perfused skin

• pronounced unilateral changes

• increasing redness, warmth, or fever

• visual disturbances or neurological symptoms

If a vascular complication is suspected, do not wait until the next regular follow-up appointment.

Bepanthen after lip augmentation in Aachen – does it make sense?

Bepanthen® Wound and Healing Ointment contains dexpanthenol and is used to support the healing of superficial skin injuries. However, it is not a specifically studied standard aftercare for lip fillers.

Whether an ointment should be used after a lip injection depends on the injection sites, the product used, and the doctor's aftercare instructions.

Generally applies:

• Do not automatically apply Bepanthen directly after treatment.

• Do not touch fresh injection sites with unwashed hands.

• Use ointment only thinly and without vigorous massaging if medically recommended.

• Do not use antiseptic cream on your own.

• If swelling, pain, or discoloration increases, do not just apply ointment, but contact the treating practice.

A clean, low-irritant lip balm may also be sufficient after medical approval. The individual instructions of the treating doctor take precedence.

Most immediate reactions such as swelling, tenderness, and bruising are temporary. However, hyaluronic acid fillers are not completely free of possible long-term consequences.

Possible later complications include:

Nodules and hardenings

Nodules can result from product distribution, inflammatory reactions, or foreign body reactions, among other things. Not every palpable unevenness shortly after treatment is already a long-term complication.

Filler migration

Migration refers to filler moving outside the originally intended area. Product quantity, placement, tissue conditions, and repeated treatments can play a role here.

Delayed inflammatory reactions

Inflammatory reactions can rarely occur weeks, months, or even later. Possible signs include persistent swelling, nodules, redness, or tenderness.

Persistent asymmetries or overcorrection

Repeated overtreatment

However, they should not be ruled out by stating that hyaluronic acid is a "body-identical substance" and therefore fundamentally risk-free. Injectable fillers are medically produced and, depending on the product, stabilized hyaluronic acid gels.

Can lip fillers be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be treated with hyaluronidase in certain situations. This may be necessary, for example, in the case of a vascular complication, undesired product distribution, or pronounced overcorrection.

However, a Hylase treatment is not a simple undo button. It is an independent medical procedure and can cause side effects or allergic reactions. Furthermore, the extent and speed of dissolution cannot always be precisely predicted.
